Unstructured interviews are used during knowledge elicitation, where the knowledge engineer and domain experts simply discuss the topic. They may be particularly useful in the early stages when the knowledge engineer is seeking to get a boad view of an area, or for more unstructured problems. Often the knowledge engineer will have seed questions to help keep the discussion going.
